Applets slightly delayed
#1508 by njpatel83 (1.0000) posted on 7:21am Sunday, May 27th, 2007
Hi guys,
[Q]

Just wanted to let you know that the applets stuff will be slightly delayed (until tomorrow), because of some problems with the notification-area applet, which may require some changes in libawn. However, if I can't fix it by tomorrow, then I will commit the applet code anyway, so people can start coding applets :).
[Q]

Regards,

Sweet!
[Q]

Will it support Python applets? That's the only (programming) language I know.

Hmm, suckage, notification area only seems to work for windows which are not 'transparent'...

njpatel83,
[Q]

I suspect if you want a notification area applet you will pretty much need to write your own. Then again, gimmie has its own, so I figure it cant be THAT complex can it?

I have, but at the moment, it is having issues with the fact that the top-level window the GtkSocket is child of doesn't not have a rgb colormap ie. is transparent. If I make the main window of Awn non-transparent, everything works a charm, so its just a matter of figuring out the reason why.
[Q]

The Gnome notification-area applet does the same (when I proted it to Awn applets-system). I wonder if there is another dock that has a notification area and is transparent...maybe I could steal some code :).

Well the notification area isnt exactly tied to GTK as its an FDO standard. What about implementing it in Cairo?

I would, but it looks horrible at the moment, because I am having to force it to use RGB for it to work, but now I know what the problem is, I can try and do some hackery :).

Yeah, it'll be nice. I'll need the ability to have more than one AWN running for that to completely happen though. I have too much to put on one bar.

As the rest of us, I don't know what size the icons in the notification area (applet) will have, but a main problem (even with the gnome notification area) is the difference in size of the icons (in the notification area).
[Q]

Is it possible that the AWN applet has solved this problem? :P

it would be nice if AWN could stack notification area icons into two rows allowing better utilization of the space available

Yes, icons are in a table with two rows.

Ah, not to let you down:

[Q]

As you can see, the applets are still work-in-progress! The systray icons have a blue background because I have been messing around with colours, they won't be like when its released! Beneath them is apager (the same one the Gnome uses), its cool for now, I want something more blingy when I get some more time, and finally you have a cairo-clock. The preferences still work, so you can choose your theme, have seconds on/off etc.
[Q]

Hope that makes you happy until I commit :).
[Q]

P.S. The systray and pager is one applet in the shot, but it'll probably be two separate one by the time I release, unless you like this setup more...

It's probably better to have them separate. Idk how well this one would handle my usual 6+ systray icons :).
[Q]

EDIT: Pager + Clock (time/date in text) would make a good combo.
