Sorry/I'm Back
#1222 by njpatel83 (1.0000) posted on 8:35am Saturday, May 12th, 2007
Hi Everyone,
[Q]

I just wanted to apologise to everyone for the lack of movement in Awn/Affinity. This isn't down to having too many projects or anything like that, but I/my family have truly had a very tough few months, which I believe is behind us now.
[Q]

Awn
===
[Q]

To that end, since yesterday, I have slowly begun getting back into things, I've merged some patches that were lying around, and I am currently fixing the DBus backend, with the hope that I can hack the mail-notification app so we can have proper Evolution<->Awn intergration.
[Q]

I am also working hard to complete the folowing in Awn:
+ Task notifications (ie a little bubble over the task icon).
+ Ability to change the task icons.
+ Fixing *all* warnings and maybe compiling with -Werror
+ Plugins - yes, I'm not waiting for the next release, I want this feature, so its happening ASAP.
[Q]

There are obviously other things which I am fixing/adding along the way, and I hope to build up the usual momentum over the next week or so.
[Q]

Affinity
========
[Q]

I know that Affinity has its fair share of problems (not all its fault), and I am working on fixing those. Currently I am writing a library which provides a sane interface to both Tracker & Beagle, this may take longer than I wish, but it is *very* important for Affinity's future.
[Q]

The crux of this being you will see more Awn movement than Affinity movement, but I assure you that I am working hard on it, and as soon as its ready, it'll be released.
[Q]

Arena
=====
[Q]

I hope to continue work on this soon, but it will have to wait until I have caught up with Awn work. However, all is not lost, my Clutter skills have x10 while working at OH, and I have written some crazy stuff, which I will hopefully be able to show you soon, and which has code that can be used in Arena.
[Q]

Everything Else
===============
[Q]

I have just bought a domain on which I hope to public SVN my Nautilus & Gtk stuff, so you guys can test it. I'll blog it once it's ready.
[Q]

Thanks,
[Q]

Neil

Great to have you back! I can't wait to see Arena, I've been looking for a good front-row-like player for Linux that's not huge and monolithic like MythTV, and nothing I've found thus far (freevo, elisa) has worked. AWN plugins will be awesome (lots of people have been asking me if they're possible), but I'd also like to see some more work on task management too, mainly the ability to have all windows of an app in one icon.
[Q]

[Q]

Awesome! I'll probably put packages for those in my repo too. I think I may need to change the name of the repo section from 'avant-window-navigator', since it has a lot more than just AWN now. :)
[Q]

Updated AWN-svn package is uploading to my repo as we speak. *prepares for deluge of support questions*
[Q]

EDIT: Repo updated!

Hi and welcome back!
[Q]

May I suggest cGmail as an alternative to mail-notification?
[Q]

I wrote a simple patch to have it print the number of unread emails on the Evolution icon (now included upstream). By far not the best integration possible, but I am waiting for the plug-in architecture to be implemented :)

Here's what I discovered so far:
[Q]

* A preferences window to change the position of the launchers in the dock: AWN Icon Preferences
[Q]

* The change icon feature now works: right click on a launcher, preferences, change icon (searayman discovered this)
[Q]

* Right click menu: right clicking on dock launchers shows a menu that now includes the menu items from the window manager, like minimize, maximize, move to another workspace, etc.
[Q]

* Fading icons: a new dock animation alternative to the bouncing icons (still buggy, at least for me) [EDIT: not new, after all]
[Q]

Anything else? :D

Just right click on the dock (not on a launcher), there will be two options: one opens the usual preferences window, the other will open the new one.

Not yet, I am working hard on the applets at the moment. I didn't want to use Bonobo like the gnome-panel, and it's important to have applets running as separate processes for Awn's stability. Hence I am 'rolling my own' by using GtkSocket & GtkPlug with DBus as the IPC. It's actually quite cool :).

Hopefully the weekend will give me enough time to finish/commit it.

I know you are rolling your own here, but I wanted to mention that there is a bug with bonobo and evolution that might come into play when users log out and back in. I just wanted to mention that as extra encouragement NOT to use bonobo, save us all the hassle of our applets having the wrong DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS.
