So a couple new things...

Please notice at the top, if you click "New thread", the new thread form loads on the page. Also note that if you click "post below threshold", it toggles the threshold slider on and off.
[Q]

For some reason setting the threshold control to have a default css display of "none" totally screws up the line, and it doesn't look entirely correct until you actually drag the slider a bit.
[Q]

As such, I'm in the market for a different slider. This one's a piece of shit.

Can you use the Yahoo! slider?
[Q]

It's released under a BSD license. http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/slider/index.html

Is it worth it to use the yahoo one and add like 2mb of code to be able to use it? that slider requires like the entire YUI grids library.
[Q]

well, maybe not that much. it is a pretty nice slider. perhaps il est le answrez

Here are the dependencies, using the compressed JS files Yahoo provides. Still sizeable, but not too bad for a one-time download. You could reduce the overall JS download sizes by relying on YUI for your Ajax and effects stuff too, but that's a big change obviously.
[Q]

2kb yahoo-min.js
11kb dom-min.js
13kb event-min.js
23kb dragdrop-min.js
12kb slider-min.js
total: 61KB

It looks like the exiting JavaScript load is as follows:
[Q]

overlib - 49KB
blur6ex - 31KB
[Q]

slider/range - 6kb
slider/slider - 16kb
slider/timer - 4kb
[Q]

so to add the YUI slider you'd remove the existing slider and add an additional 35KB of javascript.
[Q]

The YUI Connection Ajax library is about the same size as Sajax, so there's no savings there; however, the utilities and API calls provided could help you reduce some of the custom code in blur6ex.js. I doubt it'd reduce it to the tune of 35K, but the net gain *could* probably end up being 15-25KB.
[Q]

But just removing the existing slider and gaining that 35KB isn't too bad.

Here, do this. Take that big, fat Overlib library and run it through this: http://javascriptcompressor.com/
[Q]

That'll take it down to 22KB, shaving off a good 27K. Then the net gain from that new slider is more like 8KB.
[Q]

Actually, make a habit of compressing blur6ex.js too (just a step you do before pushing new releases out).

That's probably a better compressor actually. Flickr uses that.
